Thinking Matters…for Innovation

In my last blog I explored the relationship between thinking and innovation. Interestingly, in Innovation Economics by, Robert Atkinson and Stephen Ezell, thinking is directly associated with a company’s or nation’s ability to innovate better.

They argue that, “success for any organization, whether a company or nation, depends first and foremost on an ability to challenge status quo thinking, for “groupthink” leads individuals to believe that they know what the problem is (or worse, that there is no problem in the first place). ..For any nation [or company] to win in the race for innovation advantage, it has to start with thinking and, where necessary, challenging the prevailing thinking.”

I couldn’t agree more. In my experience working with numerous organizations it is apparent that an understanding of how the organization thinks provides important insight related to advancing its innovation agenda.

How You Think…for Innovation

An integral component of an organization’s innovative capability revolves around its cognitive style. Cognitive styles of leaders and teams influence, among other things, the process of attention. In other words, what kinds of knowledge, information and ideas are deemed to be relevant and vital to achieve effective action.

Connective Intelligence possesses deep expertise in a premier thinking skills system which assesses the cognitive styles of leaders and teams in organizations around the world. I have mentored with Jerry Rhodes over the last 18 years who developed what is known as the TIP (thinking-intentions profile). Connective Intelligence utilizes TIP and other thinking tools, under license, from Jerry Rhodes.

From an innovation perspective, Rhodes’ TIP has proven to be very helpful in building clarity around the thinking requirements at each phase of the innovation process, as well as mapping the cognitive (thinking) styles of innovators and innovation teams.

Thinking is a critical component of innovation. Assessing how you think and how your team thinks will make a significant difference in achieving effective innovation performance and results.

The Doctor is in…

I successfully completed my Final Oral Review (FOR) today which means I have accomplished all of the requirements for my Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Systems.

I indicated in my last blog that I would introduce the INQ-I, which I developed as part of my doctoral studies. The INQ-I (Innovation Quotient Inventory) has proven to be internally reliable and structurally valid. It provided valuable insight to the four organizations that participated in my research investigation and, importantly, accurately represented their organizations innovative capability.

It consists of 8 factors, called Orientations, which influence an organization’s innovative potential. What is most interesting is that it actually provides a pulse of an organization’s overall ability to achieve intelligent action, and not just its innovative potential, per se.

It does this because the INQ-I is designed as a systems tool, which taps into elements that drive effectiveness within the whole organizational system. The INQ-I assesses key capacities that influence an organization’s ability to effectively respond and adapt to market and competitive complexity and change.

I’ll be talking a lot more about this exciting new empirical tool in future blogs and publications.

Yours truly,

Dr. Brett Richards, Ph.D.

Accelerated Innovation

Strategic Business Optimization
(Not Your Ordinary Leadership Program)

We are excited to be working with major North American organizations, improving business performance through accelerated innovation.

Groups of leaders learn skills to enhance their strategic acumen while working on select AIPs (accelerated innovation projects) identified by the senior executive to advance the organization’s strategic agenda.

Within 6 months the organization benefits from engaging their leaders from across the organization to rapidly improve customer value and experience, as well as initiate opportunities to grow the business and improve profitability.

I’ll introduce the INQ-I™ (innovation quotient inventory) in my next blog which quantitatively assesses and organization’s innovative potential.

Inspiring Authentic Leadership

According to a recent survey by the Conference Board and Right Management, more businesses are expected to increase spending on leadership development programs in the next 12 months.

Leadership requires effective thinking and involves a dynamic mix of attitudes, behaviors, skills and abilities to perform it well. Leading requires engaging a group of individuals to achieve a worthy goal and the way a leader engages those individuals makes a discernible difference to their success.

Great leaders are great learners. The spirit and intent of our approach is to assist leaders in their efforts at becoming better learners and, subsequently, even more effective leaders than they already are.

Discovering Your Emotional Power

Do you ever ‘think’ about what emotion you are feeling at the moment you are feeling it?

When you are face to face with tight deadlines, clients who want contracts yesterday, and a boss who is under pressure all at the same time, how do you respond to the stress of the situation? How do you relate to others when you get frustrated? Do you explode or hold it all in?

A key challenge for most people is to become more aware and skillful at utilizing our emotional abilities. Being able to reflect on the day’s events to explore what triggered your frustration or anger will help to increase personal resilience and you will be able to respond to Life’s pressures in such a way that is effective, rather than destructive.

Our Emotional Power® Model helps people identify and harness The Right Emotion at the Right Moment™. Contact us if you would like our support to improve personal and team performance in the critical area of emotional intelligence.

Think Better, Sell Better

Is it possible to identify specific thinking processes that underpin the delivery of desired selling behaviors?

Research has shown that thinking influences behavior. Our thinking process – how we think- affects our decisions, our actions and consequently the results we get. Quality selling is governed by quality thinking.

The process of examining an organization’s selling competencies through the lens of thinking provides sales professionals and managers with practical strategies & tools to adapt their thinking and behavior to effectively fulfill their selling accountabilities. Aligning behavioral competencies with thinking and with personal thinking preferences provides tangible information and builds a platform in which sales people can take full advantage of their personal competence and develop practical strategies to improve their performance.

“Quality thinking is at the root of high performance;
why should selling be any different?”

Navigating Through Change

What does Change mean to you? Specifically, what does it mean in your organization and how will it affect you. Can your company successfully transition through its current state to where it needs to be while maintaining organizational effectiveness and create a sense of stability for the employees?

Navigating through change requires effective thinking and emotional fluency. It also involves a dynamic mix of attitudes, behaviors, skills and abilities to perform it well. Building a map to help navigate through the change is key to achieving high quality results.

Customized organizational Tasks Maps contain the core elements required to achieve effective action for organizational tasks such as leading change. Like systems, the elements within the Task Map are interdependent and collectively influence organizational outcomes.

Given that organizations are systems, approaching change from a systems perspective can lead to more effective business results.

The difference between connected and connective

Innovation is driven by connective intelligence.
To begin with the end in mind, life is essentially connective, it reaches out. Innovation is (or ought to be) a connective process in that it requires organizations and innovators within organizations to reach out to others within and beyond their organization to continuously make new connections pertaining to ideas, knowledge or information. So what is the difference between connected and connective? To be connected feels more static and defined, whereas to be connective speaks to an ongoing activity and intent to reach out and realize new connections. The process is open and never entirely complete.

The Secret to Sustainable Growth and Profitability

Organizations around the world are required to innovate to remain competitive while creating new value for their clients, constituents, key stakeholders and partners. What is the secret to achieving sustainable growth and profitability amidst increased competition and continuous market disruption?

BConnective is my blog site which will focus exclusively on the exploration of the above through my posts over time. If you are interested in innovation and its relationship to organization value creation then this blog is for you.

By way of introduction, my organization is Connective Intelligence Inc., founded in 1999, not “collective” and not “connected” intelligence. While the adjectives “collective” and “connected” are powerful terms and somewhat related, connective intelligence® has a distinctly unique meaning. Over time, I’ll elaborate on the construct of connective intelligence® and how it relates to organizational effectiveness and innovation.
